6 Kid Friendly Activities to Explore at the Coast

By Tosha Reinmiller, August 10, 2018

Visiting the beach is an incredible experience for anyone but especially when you’re a child. Growing up at the coast, it was always about finding ways to explore the outdoors and utilize the natural beauty that surrounded us. We’ve come up with a list of 6 kid friendly activities that we loved doing when we were younger, that you can explore with your own littles while visiting the Manzanita area. Spoiler alert, you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy these activities!

Crabbing – Crabbing at the coast is fun, easy and a great excuse to spend the day outside on the coast while also catching your own dinner! Kelly’s Marina, located just south of Wheeler, as well as the Jetty Fishery and Marina just a few minutes south, provide ideal locations for sunshine and seafood.

Horse Rides – Riding a horse along the Manzanita Beach is an incredible way to view the surrounding natural beauty from a new perspective. Oregon Beach Rides provides rides from the beginning of June through labor day and is located at the Nehalem Bay State Park.

Explore Nehalem Bay & Dunes – Located within the Nehalem Bay State Park, lies endless entertainment for the kids (in all of us). Large sand dunes line the western edge of the bay, while gentle waters and usually a wind-free beach create the perfect place to dip your toes without fear of sneaker waves. Paved walking and biking paths connect the Park to the boat launch as well as the campground and amphitheater.

Ride the Train from Wheeler to Rockaway Beach
The Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad provides an incredible experience! Take the train from Wheeler to Rockaway Beach, and stop along the way. They offer specialty events throughout the year such as; Sunset Dinner Train, Fall Splendor and the Candy Cane Express!

Surf Lessons – A surf lesson is a great way to immerse yourself at the coast, pun intended. Seaside Surf Shop (Seaside) & Cleanline Surf Shop (Cannon Beach, Seaside) both offer surf lessons led by professionals willing to work with most any level of experience and age!

Yoga – Yoga Roots in Manzanita offers a variety of classes including classes for kid! Located downtown Manzanita and staffed with the friendliest and knowledgeable staff, find out if they have a class that is right for you. The answer is yes, yes they do!
