Crush on Camas

By Marisa Swenson, May 2, 2018

My previous work life graced me a handful of great friends. Being involved in each others lives on a day to day basis you get to know people and their families pretty well. I had fun listening to my friend Jude tell updates and stories about her high school daughter Erica who would also stop by the office to visit her mom sometimes with her high school sweetheart Morgan in tow. Fast forward a few years and that high schooler is all grown up and has bought her first brand new home in Camas. Erica and her high school sweetheart Morgan chose me to be their Realtor which I feel so happy and honored to have been able to represent them.
Camas is a beautiful city on the Washington side of the Columbia River. Here are some of our favorite things about Camas:

Lacamas Lake – Located just minutes outside of downtown Camas, this amazing public forested park has 312 acres of fishing, kayaking and other outdoor fun, like a 6 mile network of hiking trails. Packed with plenty of wildlife, like bald eagles, deer and beavers, you’re sure to have fun and see something interesting when you spend a day, or even an hour, at the lake.

Camas Days – At this annual festival, located on and around NE 4th Avenue (the main street in historic downtown Camas), you’ll find arts & craft vendors, plentiful wine & microbrews, food carts, live music in the park and in local establishments, parades, kids activities, a softball tournament and the annual favorite – bathtub races in front of City Hall.

Liberty Theater – With prices ranging from $4-$6, this historic, art-deco theater features a broad range of second run movies, art house favorites, and foreign films. Built in 1927 and renovated in 2013, when the Liberty upgraded to digital video and audio, and divided into two viewing venues — a 300-seat auditorium and the 29-seat Granada Studio, which is primarily for independent and foreign films.

Food & Drink

  • A Beer at a Time – this large tap house features hundreds of beers & ciders on tap and in bottles, plus pizza, pretzels, and mac & cheese on the menu, with the occasional live band providing entertainment.
  • Mill City Brew Werks – a family restaurant with a full cocktail bar and 10,000 sq. ft. of beer brewing on site.
  • Caffe Piccolo – a traditional espresso shop, selling a variety of paninis, plus pastries from Marsee Bakery
  • Birch Street Uptown Lounge – this classy place feels a bit like stepping into a Humphrey Bogart movie – a dark and cozy cocktail lounge with live music (usually a jazzy duo) every Friday & Saturday, and serves some of the best cocktails in the city.
  • Also, coming soon, Michelin-starred chef Peter Rudolph will be opening a new restaurant this month in downtown Camas

Over the past decade, Marisa has sought out the best in local mid-century and contemporary modern architecture and design around the city. Her website Modern Homes Portland is a labor of love where she shares her enjoyment of all things modern including a curated list of modern homes for sale in the Portland area. In her past, Marisa worked with a company that provided home contractor services. She worked closely with contractors identifying, evaluating and correcting common maintenance issues in homes and commercial buildings. Pairing this experience with many years of client service and a love of homes made the transition to becoming a Realtor seamless. She is a member of the Architectural Heritage Center, Doccomomo's Oregon Chapter, Restore Oregon where she also sponsors their Mid-Century Modern tour each year.  Working with these organizations, she hopes to help preserve buildings from the modernist movement mid century and beyond, and to help spread awareness of their importance. She currently lives in the suburbs of Portland with her family and is working on restoring her Northwest Regional Style custom-built 1960's time capsule home that will be added to the historic registry in 2017.When she’s not working with clients or scouring the city for hidden architectural gems, Marisa likes to spend time with her family, play soccer, hike in the beautiful Pacific NW forests, visit new restaurants and coffee shops.
