When the Going Gets Tough- The Realtor Gets Dirty!

By Nichole Connelly, February 20, 2018

Located one home off Portland’s beloved Hawthorne Street, rests a sleepy 1884 5 bedroom house, sitting boldly on its large 0.3 acre lot. “Ohh.. I wish you could have met him….” chuckled his granddaughter, as we all sat around my large dining room table. Memories of their quirky grandfather filled the air,  “he collected just about everything!” they said. “He even painted the house the ugliest colors he could find to keep the realtors away!” (taking a small amount of offense, given my UofO green and yellow roots). It wasn’t until the listing appointment that I got the true understanding of what it means when someone “collects everything”. Sitting around the front porch, one daughter said “you really should see what we are up against”- she shook her head as we climbed the 100 year old staircase. Four generations of books, games, dolls, coins, stones, antique photography equipment and model cars packed every inch of the almost 4000 square foot home from floor to ceiling. The family flew in from all over the country, claimed what physically could hold a memory as a keepsake, filled dumpsters, donated, hauled, lifted and pulled.. but time was against us. As we crept into December, I knew I needed to up my game plan. But what happens when the everyone lives across the country, there’s work to be done and the budget dries up? This Realtor puts on her rubber boots, borrows her dad’s power washer, and gets to work! Several 20 yard dumpsters later, hours of work in the rain and every sore muscle pulsing in pain- we re-list the home. As I stand on the front porch in my sweat pants, screwdriver in hand, and smelling like fresh Pinesol; the first of many buyer’s agents pull up. I smile and let out a tired sigh, realizing the offers are soon to be flowing in. Before we lay our heads to rest that evening, we will have received several offers. With a bittersweet goodbye, we hand over the property to their new owners- in all of its green and yellow glory.

Ready to sell!
