Soaring Above the Willamette

By Rebecca Wilson, May 2, 2018

The St. Johns Bridge is one of the most well known bridges in a city full of bridges. Sometimes called the Grand Lady of Portland, those distinctive Gothic Towers rise 40 stories above the river below with the roadway arching 200 feet over the water. Its distinctive sea-foam green color and peaked silhouette stretching through the mists perfectly harmonize with the hills and forests surrounding it. This majestic green beauty has also been featured in movies, television, music videos and even comic books. This span is rare in that its structural elements are designed to be aesthetically engaging rather than the more conventional approach of adding pleasing elements onto a distasteful framework. When it was finished in 1931, it was the longest suspension bridge west of the Great Lakes and of the nearly 400 other bridges the designer created, the St. Johns remained David Steinman’s most beloved. At its dedication, he said, “A challenge and an opportunity to create a structure of enduring beauty in the God-given wondrous background was offered us when were asked to design the bridge. It is the most beautiful bridge in the world we feel.”
