Welcome to the Westside

By Debra Hornbecker, June 6, 2018

I met Keren and Justin at a friend’s house close to a year ago.  As we chatted, I learned that they lived on an incredible street on the eastside with neighbors who were so lovely that it would be difficult to leave.  That being said, their commute across the river every day to get Justin to work and their kids to school was killing them.  Mind you, I live on the westside and I made the same move seven years ago, so I understood their challenge.  I also understood what my move to the westside meant for me and for my quality of life.

Almost a year went by and I was contacted by Justin one morning in April.  Justin had gone into an open house for a home in Multnomah Village.  This home seemed to check all of their boxes.  I quickly got them connected to a lender, we wrote an offer, and while their offer was rejected, the seed had been planted for me.  Justin and Keren were ready to begin looking on the westside.

I chatted with them about their criteria, their family, and their dreams for their future.  With three beautiful children and two busy careers, I previewed many westside homes for them.  I didn’t want to waste any of their valuable time unless it checked some serious boxes for them.

The house on Dickinson Lane came up and I took notice.  It had 4 bedrooms upstairs, a formal dining room, space for dining in the kitchen, a study on the main, and a huge basement.  It also had a large unfinished space with plenty of room to build out a music studio for Justin.  It sat on close to an acre.  It was beautiful, but I didn’t know if the lot size would be a deal breaker.  I went to preview it for them one morning and I thought to myself, this place is special.

First taking Justin and then taking Keren over to the house, we discussed the pros and cons of moving.  Keren’s parents were visiting so they also joined us for subsequent showings.  As Justin and Keren walked the cul de sac, I imagined this expansive home being the location of many family gatherings.

We needed to be patient as the sellers were not quite ready for our offer, which was considerably lower than the list price.  In the meantime, I showed them other homes in the surrounding area, until two weeks went by, and thoughts of the Dickinson home only became more clear.  This was their home.

I had stayed in contact with the agents.  It seemed that at the same time that we were ready to write another offer, the sellers were ready to consider a below listing price offer.  I always say, when it’s meant to work out, it will.  And so it did.

Mazel tov to Justin, Keren, Ariel, Matan, and Nava!  I’m so excited for you all!  It’s been such a treat to work with you to get you into this incredible home!
